Dermal fillers are a non-surgical procedure which work to restore and add volume and contour to the face. They are used to balance and enhance facial features, and are highly effective in plumping out fine lines, wrinkles and folds to rejuvenate and lift the skin. At Surface Clinic we only use premium hyaluronic acid (HA) based dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the body, involved in hydrating the skin and keeping it flexible, it attracts water which ultimately leads to the appearance of naturally plump skin. Different types of HA filler are modified for different uses to ensure beautiful, natural results. Research has shown hyaluronic acid to be safe and adverse effects are rare.

Lips come in all different shape and sizes. For a person in their 30’s the lip skin quality, size, shape and plumpness will differ to someone who’s in their 40’s and 50’s. Rejuvenating the lips has an anti-ageing effect and also restores balance to the rest of the facial features. Lips Fillers have been given bad press on social media and many are afraid of seeking such procedures as they may end up having duck lips. Duck lips are the result of overfilling the lips and utilising poor techniques.

What are the potential side effects?

As hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body, the risks of side effects is minimal, however as with any sort of injection, some swelling, redness and occasionally bruising may occur. Detailed information on possible side effects will be provided at your consultation.

Will the treatment be painful?

We apply a numbing cream prior to your treatment to ensure you feel as little pain as possible, however patients may feel a mild burning or stinging sensation depending on the area treated.

What is the healing process like?

Your dermal filler results will be visible immediately following treatment. Patients usually experience some redness, slight swelling and occasionally bruising may occur, which can last from a few hours to a few days depending on the individual and the area treated. Avoid exercise, alcohol, sunbathing and excessive heat to help support the healing process. We offer full aftercare guidance at your appointment and a follow up review 2 weeks after treatment to ensure you are healing well and are happy with your results.

Who is not a suitable candidate for dermal filler?

This treatment is not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Other contraindications include active infections or coldsores, some autoimmune diseases, a history of severe allergy or anaphylactic shock. A full list of contraindications will be provided at your consultation.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The length of time results last can vary according to a few factors: how the body metabolises fillers, the area treated and the type of filler used. The treatment process stimulates the body’s natural collagen production, so that natural volume can be restored in the injected areas, even after the filler has metabolised. Overall, fillers can last anything from 6 to 18 months and occasionally even longer.
